Hallux rigidus is a disorder at the base of the
big toe. It causes pain and stiffness and with time it gets increasingly harder to bend the toe. “Hallux” refers to the big toe, while “rigidus” indicates that the toe is rigid and cannot move - this is a form of degenerative arthritis that limits movement and is progressive as time goes on leading to a “frozen joint”. Our in office modality Shockwave Therapy can break up stiffness and the scar tissue conservatively without invasive treatments. Additionally, altering the biomechanics with Custom Foot Orthotics can decrease the stress through the big toe causing the degeneration in the first place. Give us a call today with any questions - we are here to keep you active, walking and mobile.

Preventing The Preventable In The Global Fight Against Diabetic Foot Ulcers & Amputations11/18/2021 Watch Dr. Katia Langton's presentation at the 3rd Summit of the Americas Diabetic Foot where she covers preventing the destruction of the diabetic foot: IDF clinical practice recommendations and guidelines on protecting the diabetic foot. Watch now: In this training, Katia Langton covers the three categories diabetic wounds fall into: neuropathic, ischemic, and neuroischemic. Knowing the distinct features of each wound category is essential to identifying wound progression, infection, and healing.
Failure to properly identify the type of wound that exists can lead to an ineffective diabetic wound treatment plan, causing long-term complications or amputation. We are now offering Shock Wave Therapy at Oceanwalk Pedorthic Clinic in Nanaimo.
For the past 20 years, Shock Wave Therapy has been used, with great success, as an effective and non-invasive treatment of a number of chronic musculoskeletal conditions including:
A Shock Wave is a longitudinal acoustic wave travelling with ultrasonic speed in the water of the body tissue. This single pressure pulse with a short needle-like positive spike of less than 1 microsecond. Shock Wave Therapy works to disrupt chronic pain by introducing a healing shock into the system which promotes increased vascularity, stimulates tissue healing, reduces calcification in the tissues, increases local anti-inflammatory products and inhibits pain receptors to achieve pain relief. Researchers have shown that the local delivery of Shock Wave Therapy stimulates the early expression of angiogenesis-related growth factors, including endothelial nitric oxide synthase, vascular endothelial growth factor and proliferating cell nuclear antigen. As such, it results in new vessel in-growth that improves blood supply, increases cell proliferation and accelerates tissue regeneration and healing. Based on this research, we recommend a progressive Shock Wave Therapy protocol in the treatment of these chronic conditions and clients are seen each week for 8 weeks in order to get the best outcomes. Contact us to learn more about Shock Wave Therapy or to book an appointment today. The sharp stabbing pain, numbing and tingling that wake you up at night and make you walk around to alleviate your foot pain, is horrible! But it also serves a purpose...
